Dear journalist friends all over the world. I am very sad to announce that yesterday Mohamed Mohamoud Timacade lost his life. He was shot six times near his home in Mogadischu where he worked as a reporter for many years and where he tried to help other journalists doing their extremly dangerous job. He survived but after a few days in hospital he finally lost the fight. He was the 7th journalist killed in Somalia this year. Last year it has been 18.
One of Timacades bests friends wrote me today, that he was not able to go to the funeral, due to bad security situation. Heartbreakingly he explained his feelings, ending with the sentence "Were dying, only because were journalists."
There are colleagues in many parts of the world daily risking their lifes, for not even half the salary we earn. May their bravery and endurance remember us what our job is about. It is not about fame. It is not about colleagues telling us how awesome our last story was. It is about searching moments of truth. And it is about giving voices to those who cannot speak for themselves.
